What Is A Great Low Impact Exercise For Retirees

Fitness, as we get older, has been the subject of a couple our De Paul Manor Estate Lifestyle Resort on the Gold Coast Blog and we have been getting a lot of questions, so in this month’s blog we will continue the Fitness subject.

One of the major questions that has been asked of us, “What is a great low Impact Exercise for retirees”? A sensational question, and we have a simple answer, Swimming.

The great thing about Swimming is it’s good for just about everyone. It accommodates all ages, stages, abilities and disabilities, and there’s also evidence it can slow down the aging process and that excites us all.

A long-term study at Indiana University Bloomington’s Counselman Center for the Science of Swimming found that master’s Swimmers (over age 35) who swam roughly 3,200 to 4,500 meters (about 3.2 to 4.8 kilometers) three to five times a week, postponed the aging process. And not just for a few years but for decades, according to traditional age markers like muscle mass blood pressure and lung function.

But it’s not just the benefits of the aging process that swimming is great for let’s look at some of the other great effects on your body and mind that a dip in the pool can give you.
Swimming is kind on your joints, so it’s a great exercise for Arthritis or those old sporting injuries. When you swim, around 90% of your body weight is supported by the water. The relatively weightless environment and support from the water helps to overcome painful movement in the joints that are affected by the condition.

It improves Mental Health. When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins, which trigger a positive feeling in the body. An early morning swim can give you a feel-good buzz that can keep you positive and motivated until lunchtime.

It soothes stresses. It’s thought that swimming is a particularly good way to relax your body, soothe your mind and reduce anxiety. Not only will it stimulate mood-boosting hormones, but the solo nature of swimming gives you the opportunity to clear your mind and be at one with your thoughts – it’s a bit like moving meditation.

So, as you can see Swimming could be the ideal exercise for you. At De Paul Manor Estate Lifestyle Resort on the Gold Coast, we realise the benefits of swimming and one of our retreat features is a 25-meter heated swimming pool, complete with walk in ramp and spa.
